History

1955 Calvary Baptist Church organized The Goble Street Mission on land donated by Pinkney Mill Co. The churches hoped to bring the gospel to the people of Sarvis Hill. Mr. Grady Pennington, a mill worker & ministerial student was called to preach.Services were held in yards & homes on Saturday evenings while the original church was being built. The people of Sarvis Heights were visited & anyone not attending a church was invited to attend Bethany.  In February of 1956, the mission moved into their first building. During this time, Grady Pennington was ordained by Calvary to become the first pastor. 1958 saw the mission growing and it became the current Bethany Baptist Church with 75 original charter members. The church had two W.M.U. circles. The first V.B.S. had an average attendance of 135 in the summer of ’58.  1958 also saw the addition of Sunday school rooms & restrooms.By 1961 the average Sunday school attendance of 121 & a church membership of 223. V.B.S. that year had 193 in attendance.1962 saw the end of an era when Pastor Pennington resigned to pastor a church in Brownsburg, Indiana. Various pastors filled in until Jan. of ’63 when M.B. Motts was called by the church. Under Rev. Motts the church voted to build a parsonage next door.Following the resignation of Rev. Motts, Troy Thomas was called in Sept. of 1968. Under Pastor Thomas, in 1974, the church voted to build a new building. Mr. Dickie Hannah was voted in as associate pastor the same year..1983 saw the resignation of Rev. Thomas and Jerry Rockholt called as the new pastor. Rev. Rockholt served for two years before Gary Boling became the bi-vocational pastor. Gary had been licensed by Ridge Baptist and ordained by Calvary Baptist.  Ken Lane became the associate pastor in Feb. 1989.   Ken resigned in 1994 and Gary resigned in Dec. 1994.Chris Norris was called as pastor by Bethany. He served from Dec. 1999 until March 2001. He left to be an associate pastor in Gaffney S.C.David Stevenson was called by the church in Sept. 2001 and served until his resignation in Jan. 2003.Dwayne Burks came to Bethany in July 2003. Under Dwayne’s direction, Bethany entered into a partnership with Parkwood Baptist to revitalize Bethany.
